What to wear to your branding session …
You've booked your branding session — yay! Now comes the big question: what on earth do I wear?!
You’ve got this … and I’m here to help.
The good news? With a few simple tips, you’ll walk into your session feeling confident and ready to shine.
1. Pick Pieces That Show Your Shape
One of the most flattering things you can do is wear tops that have some waist definition.
Think about tops that either:
Naturally taper at the waist
Can be tucked in slightly at the front (a "French tuck" is magic!)
Or are gently shaped to hint at your silhouette without clinging.
Overly baggy clothing tends to hide your shape altogether — and in photos, it can actually make you look bigger than you are. You don’t have to go tight, but choosing clothes that skim your figure will photograph beautifully.
2. Choose Pants That Fit Well (and Aren’t Too Baggy)
For pants, opt for styles that are tailored but comfortable.
Slimmer leg styles work better than very wide legs.
A classic straight or slightly tapered cut is a great option.
High-waisted or mid-rise pants are perfect for creating a flattering line and smoothing the waist area.
Remember, you may be sitting on the floor, in a chair or standing. Your pants need to work in all of these poses!
If you love jeans, go for darker denim without too much distressing — it looks more polished on camera.
3. Darker Colours Work Best
When we’re photographing in a neutral studio (think soft whites), wearing darker colours really helps you pop off the background.
I often suggest rich tones like:
Navy
Royal blue
Deep teal
Burgundy
Forest green
While black can sometimes work, navy and royal blue actually tend to be softer and more flattering on skin tones, helping you glow rather than feel washed out.
4. Layer with a Great Jacket or Blazer
Adding a jacket instantly adds structure and sophistication to your outfit.
Some ideas:
A fitted blazer for a classic, corporate edge
A soft leather jacket for a cool, modern feel
A longer-line cardigan or trench for a more relaxed, lifestyle look
Bringing two or three jacket options can really stretch your outfit possibilities without needing to change your whole look.
5. Don’t Forget Your Shoes!
Shoes matter more than you might think.
If you're wearing pants, opt for a pointed toe or low-cut shoe to elongate your legs.
If you're going bare legs or wearing cropped pants, choose shoes that look polished — like stylish ankle boots, strappy flats, or simple block heels.
(And yes, even if you think we won’t see them — having the right shoes changes how you feel standing there!)It is amazing how much more confident you look and feel when you wear heels. Pack some, even if you don’t normally wear them. They are amazing at helping you look professional.
Don’t be scared of white sneakers, but try to make sure they look clean.
6. Bonus Tips:
Necklines: V-necks, scoops, and open collars tend to be more flattering than high crew necks.
Jewellery: Keep it simple and intentional. A statement piece can be amazing, but avoid super busy, noisy pieces.
Hair and Makeup: A little polish goes a long way! Professional hair and makeup can make you feel amazing, but if you prefer DIY, just go for a little more than your everyday look (the camera tends to wash makeup out slightly). You don’t NEED hair and makeup done to look beautiful, you already are. BUT … it makes you FEEL more beautiful which helps you stand in front of the camera with more confidence, and smile a little bigger … and that shows in the portraits.
Feel Like You: Most importantly, your outfit should still feel like you. If you don’t feel comfortable in it, it will show.
Bring a flowy skirt: a little dancing with an outfit that has movement is a great way to showcase your personality.
Remember:
Your branding session is about telling the story of who you are now — strong, beautiful, experienced, wise. What you wear is just the frame.
You are the art.
I can’t wait to capture you! If you have any questions about outfits or want to send me options ahead of time, I’m always happy to help.
